The Intern Spotlight: Shannon Sparks

In today’s post, meet current Peppercomm SF intern and future industry star, Shannon Sparks

FullSizeRenderTell us about yourself—where did you/do you go to school, where are you from and what brought you to Peppercomm?

I’m a California girl! I was born and raised just north of San Francisco in Marin County. Currently, I’m a senior at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington where I’m majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Marketing and International Relations.

I had my first “taste” of public relations through an internship with Bloomsday, one of the largest running races in the U.S. I gained first-hand experience in event management, promotions and media relations. Last summer I completed an internship with BHW1 Advertising, a small ad agency in Spokane. At BHW1, I worked on several regional business and government agency accounts, as well as assisted with business development. This internship solidified that I wanted to work in communications.

This past spring I studied abroad in Belgium (it’s a country FYI) and interned with Porter Novelli Brussels. Studying and interning abroad was an amazing experience!

My travels led me home to the San Francisco Bay Area, and I’m happily interning with Peppercomm this summer.

What area of the industry do you find the most appealing and why?

I enjoy the fast pace and opportunity to work with clients from diverse industries. Balancing five accounts is a challenge but proves to make every day exciting. Through my internship with Peppercomm, I’ve become more knowledgeable and gained experience in media relations by developing media lists, creating briefing books and pitching.

Any surprises or revelations about your role, the industry or Peppercomm?

Over the last few years, I’ve completed three communications internships and each has taught me something different. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how much I’m involved and included on my account teams as an intern with Peppercomm.

Where do you see yourself going in the industry?

I’m learning more and more about the public relations industry each day, but I know for certain that it’s the right place for me. While I love the fast pace and working with a variety of clients, I eventually want to find a brand I’m passionate about and do in-house communications. Next spring, I’ll graduate from Gonzaga University and I’m excited to see where the future takes me!
