Co-founder, president and Editor-in-Chief of Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington, recently spoke at the Business Chicks Luncheon in New York, NY on her life experiences, daily habits and views on getting enough sleep. I was lucky enough to volunteer helping Business Chicks with coordinating and running the event, which proved to be an extremely valuable experience.
The focus of Arianna’s address was placed on her newest book, The Sleep Revolution, which explores sleep from all angles. It covers the history of sleep, the role of dreams in our lives and the consequences of sleep deprivation, all of which are backed by sleep science.
Huffington shared her belief that our relationship with technology means that we are now more hooked on our smart phones than ever before. She urged the audience to change their habit of charging mobile devices in the bedroom. This removes the temptation to check in on work emails and social media during a time when we should be recharging ourselves.
Arianna shared her advice that “a good day, begins the night before” and continued with one of the best analogies of sleep I’ve heard yet: “you’re either entertaining the guests or cleaning up the house. Not both.” Here she is referring to the science of sleep and how it plays a crucial role in providing our body time to clean out toxic waste in the brain from the day. Essentially, she said we need to “wash the day away” to enable us to perform better. She referred to several top tier media pieces which have recently covered the topic, however more specifically she called out a Harvard Business Review piece on the link between effective leadership and sleep (tip: it’s a great read).
Continuing on the theme of sleep, she gave advice on a few items to keep on your nightstand inlcuding: an old fashioned alarm clock (since your phone shouldn’t be anywhere nearby), a glass of water, a dream book to note down the themes in your dreams, a picture of something you love and a fresh flower. As usual, Arianna’s sense of humor shined through and she suggested that “flowers can be expensive, so if you are a college student, just pick one on your walk home…I’m sure your neighbor won’t mind!”
Arianna left me with a few additional pieces of advice which I will keep in mind in future career and life situations: live life as though everything is rigged in your favor, never listen to the voice of doubt in your head, disconnect from the treadmill of your life to get creative and read books that remind you that you are more than your job.

Part one of our PeppTalks series features Janine Gordon , President, Luxury & Lifestyle and a Peppercomm Executive.
Janine Gordon has been working in communications since the tender age of 20. From Harrods in London, to Saatchi & Saatchi and starting her own PR firm, JGA, Janine took the industry by storm and has not looked back. I sat down with Janine to find out more about her life in and out of the office.
KL: Where did you grow up and where did you go to school?
JG: I am a third generation New Yorker.
I went to the University of Pennsylvania because of the school’s 5:1 men to women ratio.
KL: What was the first concert you attended?
JG: My first concert, at age 8, was a “Leonard Bernstein Young People’s Concert” led and conducted by the acclaimed composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein. It was part of a series for pre-teens and younger. Arguably, that series spawned her life-long love of music.

KL: Which TV show is your guilty pleasure?
KL: What was your first job and what did you learn from it?
JG: I was the Assistant Buyer of Junior Coats and Suits at Bloomingdale’s. That job taught me that I didn’t like shopping for other people.
Janine has impeccable taste, wearing pieces that appear curated for the Life and Times of Janine Gordon. I also ask her about the larger than life-size photograph of herself on the wall in her office.
I was asked to model in a charity fashion show.
KL: What drew you to Peppercomm?
JG: Peppercomm came to me, but it was a perfect fit culturally. I respected everything about Ed, Steve and Ted and everyone else I met.
I wonder if they saw in her what others have said to see – she appreciates the little things and makes you feel special.
KL: What activity have you taken up in your spare time?
JG: Learning Italian.
KL: What is your favorite Italian word or phrase?
JG: Porca Miseria!
What does that mean?
You miserable pig!
I crack up laughing, Janine just cracks a smile.
KL: If you could do PR for anyone famous, who would it be?
JG: Maggie Smith because she is extraordinarily talented and has a remarkable range. She’s currently portraying a bag lady in a feature film after playing the Downton Abbey Dowager Countess.
KL: What living person do you most admire and why?
JG: Emma Thompson because she is very funny, a gifted actress, an Academy award-winning screenwriter, and, from all reports, happily married and a good mom.
KL: What would your last meal on earth be?
JG: Strawberry shortcake — the entire cake — or a strawberry rhubarb pie — the entire pie. Either would be a delicious demise.
By the looks of it, Janine does not often partake in these.
KL: What was your most memorable job?
JG: Being Press Officer at Harrods, the world-famous British department store, at age 26. It was like taking the naughtiest kid in the class and making them class monitor.
KL: How did you, a young American, land the job?
JG: When asked by the Managing Director what I would need to do the job, I requested an electric typewriter. Apparently, all the other applicants asked for clothing allowances and big expense accounts. The Managing Director was a good Scot… and I came cheap. Actually, he did tell me later that my answer told him that all I really wanted to do was the job.
KL: Do you have a piece of advice you live by?
JG: ‘Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.’ I believe that this is a better philosophy than, ‘Do onto others before they do onto you.’
KL: What is Your Definition of Success?
JG: That’s a great question. How would you answer?
I tell her that my definition of success is mastering something you love.
Well, that’s it, write that down. As my favorite Intern Kamali would say, “Success is mastering something you love.”
I can now say I’ve been quoted by one of the best – an industry insider and a Peppercomm leader.

I’m from a small town in Germany. Yes, that’s right, the country of beer, pretzels and those weird clothes they’re wearing around October. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Oktoberfest we celebrate in late September/early October in Munich every year. I actually moved to Munich in March 2013 to start college there. I’m a Business Major at the University of Applied Science Munich. The school system is very different from the American one, but in Germany we basically have a “practical semester” included in the middle of our studies. I always loved the English language and the idea of working in PR, but I never got a chance to actually experience it and know what working in Public Relations really means. But then I got the chance to start here at Peppercomm. I applied for a Visa, packed my bags and here I am! The short German girl working in a PR agency in NYC- who would have thought?
What area of the industry do you find the most appealing and why?
I always found the idea of working in business exciting. But ever since I started college, I felt I needed to do something more creative. That’s why I started a YouTube Channel back in summer, 2014 – to have at least something creative to work on besides solving math problems and writing statistic or financial papers. Working on different accounts here at Peppercomm made this even clearer to me. I’m a creative head and I love to edit visual things. It doesn’t matter if it’s videos or pictures – everything visual, colorful and even audio is what I love to work on. Creative Digital is definitely one of the most appealing areas to me.
Any surprises or revelations about your role, the industry or Peppercomm?
To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I never had worked in PR before nor had similar experiences. But what I can say is that I’m definitely surprised – positively! Even if I haven’t worked in PR before, I did some internships back in Germany and I’ve never felt more welcome or comfortable during my first week as I felt at Peppercomm. Everyone is so supportive and just wants you doing okay and survive the “horrible” first week of an internship. And even my work load was more than I expected – but that was good! I love running around attending one meeting after another. Especially because I’m working on so many different accounts. Every day is so different and I love that. I can definitely say: Now I’m spoiled!
Where do you see yourself going in the industry?
I mean the future is so unpredictable. I once wanted to be a surgeon, then I wanted to be the next superstar, now I’m sitting here working for Peppercomm in New York City. But what I know for sure is: I need something creative. I’m not sure how and where exactly this will be, but isn’t this the exiting part about not knowing what comes next? However, I would love to work as a creative head anywhere media related.
